Because Pakistan exports a staggering 90% of its raw pink salt at a meager price ranging from $60 to $80 per tonne.
What's more shocking is that this salt, sourced from the Salt Range extending from Khewra to Kalabagh within the Potohar Plateau, is often mislabeled as "Himalayan" Pink Salt when it reaches global markets, with India being a significant player in this misrepresentation.
This misbranding has stirred significant controversy, prompting parliamentary discussions and efforts to secure trademark and Geographical Indication Rights for Pakistan's pink salt through the World Intellectual Property Organization. Understandably, this move has ruffled the feathers of major profiteers in the packaged salt industry.
